Back to the Basics

I looked into our buckets of sugar, flour, oatmeal etc. These buckets come in 6 gallons, with a Mylar bag sealed, and a gamma lid attached. Most of all of our food lasts up to 25 to 30 years.

2017 Preparedness: Food!

Next up for being prepared is food. Now I know you’re thinking, “I really can’t afford to do that.” But hear me out before you decide you can’t do it!

Let’s say your food budget for the month is $600. I know some of you are thinking yours is way more or that is too high. But for this example let’s just use $600 a month. Did you know that the average American family wastes an average of 25% of their grocery bill on food that they have to throw away because it goes bad before they can use it? That means in this example, you waste about $150 a month. WOW!

Let’s say you reallocated a little more than 25% of your grocery money to being more prepared. This doesn’t mean that you will not be using this money for groceries and only for food storage. In fact, it will be used for both.

Hear me out before you click off.

Let’s say you reallocate $200 and you start with buying only those foods that you end up throwing away. Like onions, celery, mushrooms, tomatoes, carrots, maybe some hamburger and sausage etc.

2017: The Year to Be Prepared

Do you have a New Years resolution or goal? I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about becoming more prepared this year. And yes, at times it does seem like a daunting project, to say the least, but if we start small we will end up prepared!

Let’s start with non-food items at the moment. Find a box or a tub around your house. Label this Emergency supplies, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy. If you don’t have anything durable at  the moment, just find anything to collect these items inn. Does your kid have an old backpack they don’t use anymore?

Now, think about how much you can spare for the month. $25 or $50 a month?

For the month of January, let’s say you have $25 you can devote to your families preparedness. You might be thinking. “what in the world could you buy for $25 to help you become more prepared.” Well…

I went to Walmart and looked at flashlights/batteries. I found a pack of 2 flashlights with batteries for $4.47. I could buy enough flashlights and batteries for every member of my family to have in case of emergency. Put those in your tub or box. If you had any money left over put in an envelope and label emergency money, place in your tub as well to use next month.

I made a list of items I would like to purchase for this year. Personally, I am allotting myself a budget of $50 a month.

Here are a few of my items your list may be a little different.

  • Flashlights
  • batteries
  • gloves for warmth
  • hats/beanies
  • scarves
  • sweat-pants and shirts
  • deodorant
  • toothpaste/toothbrushes
  • Hand sanitizer or wipes
  • Band-aids
  • matches/lighters
  • medicine/essential oils
  • blankets
  • Duct tape
  • Rope
  • scissors
  • toilet paper
  • paper towels
  • soaps/for washing dishes, clothes, body
  • trash bags
  • file folder or notebook for important papers
  • mess kits
  • kleenex
  • Ziploc bags
  • wash rags/towels
  • Heirloom seeds for planting
  • candles
  • vinegar
  • bleach
  • other cleaning products
  • perhaps if you have children you may want to purchase some activities for them in the event of an emergency.
  • Paper notebooks
  • Puzzle books
  • colored pencils/crayons
  • coloring books
  • A small set of scriptures
  • books

These are just some items that I would like to focus on.

Recipe: Thrive Chicken Salad

You will need a one quart jar
1 cup Thrive chopped chicken
1/3 cup Thrive chopped (FD) onions
1/3 cup Thrive celery
2/3 cup water
dash of Thrive Chef’s choice blend
1/3 cup your choice of mayo
Pour dry food contents in jar along with 1/2 cup of water. Tumble in jar for 1 min then pour rest of water and a dash of Thrive Chef’s blend seasoning. Tumble for one min longer.
Pour into bowl add 1/3 mayo of your choice and stir. Serve on crackers, bread or croissants or eat as is!

Recipe: Tomato Soup

What you need:

What to do:

  1. Fill a large pot with 7 cups warm water
  2. Whisk tomato powder into water
  3. Add onion, tomato dices, sugar, bouillon. Mix well.
  4. Add lots of freshly ground black pepper. Stir to combine and heat almost to boiling.
  5. Add drink powder, and vinegar, then parsley and basil.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix milk powder and 1 1/2 cups water until dissolved.
  7. Remove soup from heat and slowly add the milk to the soup. Stir it all together.
  8. Top with a bit more black pepper and enjoy!

Recipe: Peanut Butter Cookies

1 Cup butter, room temperature

2 eggs

3/1/3 Cup Thrive Life Sugar Cookie

Mix 1 1/3 Cup Thrive Life Peanut

Flour 1⁄4 cup water

Directions:

1. Add softened butter to a mixer and whip until light. Add eggs and mix until blended.

2. Add cookie mix and peanut flour and mix together. Add water and mix until dough forms.

3. Scoop onto greased cookie sheet and press with a fork. Sprinkle tops with sugar.

4. Bake at 350F for 9–10 minutes. Makes about 36 cookies

Recipe: Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients:
1 cup Thrive Beef TVP or Ground Beef (reconstituted)
16 oz tomato sauce
1-2 cups Thrive corn
1-2 cups Green beans
Mashed Potatoes (I make 8 servings worth)
Shredded cheddar cheese
Italian Seasoning

Instructions:
Heat oven to 350.
Heat beef in tomato sauce and add Italian Seasoning.
Pour mixture into the bottom of a 9×12 pan. Layer on green beans and corn on top of the tomato and beef mixture. Spread mashed potatoes on top (the smoother the mashed potatoes, the easier it will be to spread – add more milk as needed while prepping potatoes). Sprinkle cheese on top.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted and heated through

Recipe: Quinoa Broccoli and Cheese muffins

muffins3⁄4 cup uncooked Thrive Life Quinoa

1 1⁄2 tsp Thrive Life Chicken Bouillon

1 1⁄2 cups of water

2 cups of Thrive Life (FD) Broccoli

1 cup of Thrive Life (FD) onions

1 1⁄2 cup of Thrive Life (FD) Cheddar Cheese

Small shake of Thrive Life Chef Todd’s seasoning

2 eggs slightly beaten

1 clove of garlic minced

1⁄2 tsp Paprika

Rinse Quinoa, then place in pan of 1 1⁄2 cups of water along with 1 1⁄2 tsp of Thrive Life

Chicken Bouillon. Cook for 15 min. Let cool.

Reconstitute Thrive Life (FD) Broccoli, Onions, Cheddar Cheese.

Combine in a bowl Broccoli, Onions, Cheddar Cheese. Chef Todd’s seasoning. 2 eggs

slightly beaten 1 clove of garlic minced and 1⁄2 tsp paprika. After Quinoa has cooled mix

into mixture.

Preheat oven to 350 spray mini muffin tin.

Put heaping tablespoon of mixture into muffin tin Bake for 15 or 20 min or until edges turn

a golden brown.

Recipe: Spaghetti Sauce in a Jar

½ cup (FD) Ground Beef
¼ cup (FD) Zucchini
1 cup (FD) Tomato Sauce (not tomato powder)
¼ cup (FD) Onions
2 Tbsp. Italian Seasoning
¼ cup (FD) Celery
2 Tbsp. garlic powder
½ cup (FD) Mushrooms
¼ cup (FD) Sausage Crumbles
½ cup (FD) Tomato Dices

 

Put in Jar starting with Ground Beef ending with Tomato Dices.

Boil 5 to 6 cups water, (depending on desired thickness) Add entire contents of jar and whisk until well blended. Simmer for about 10 to 15 min until vegetables and meat are fully rehydrated. Add more water if needed. Serve over cooked spaghetti or any pasta.
